Artificial Intelligence: Boon or Bane

What is AI?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. It is also the name of the academic field of study which studies how to create computers and computer software that are capable of intelligent behavior.

Artificial intelligence has been in a greater focus for the past decade, there has been huge investment and research. So let's see how it can change our lives in good way or bad in the coming future.

How will it affect our lives?

  • To begin lets start with the positive effects of Artificial Intelligence. Intelligent machines can replace human beings in many areas of work. Robots can do certain laborious tasks. Painstaking activities, which have long been carried out by humans can be taken over by the robots. Owing to the intelligence programmed in them, the machines can shoulder greater responsibilities and can be programmed to manage themselves.
  • Smartphones are a great example of the application of artificial intelligence. In utilities like predicting what a user is going to type and correcting human errors in spelling, machine intelligence is at work. Applications like Siri that act as personal assistants, GPS and Maps applications that give users the best or the shortest routes to take as well as the traffic and time estimates to reach there, use artificial intelligence. Applications on phones or computers that predict user actions and also make recommendations that suit user choice, are applications of AI. Thus, we see that artificial intelligence has made daily life a lot easier.
  • AI is at work in the medical field too. Algorithms can help the doctors assess patients and their health risks. It can help them know the side effects that various medicines can have. Surgery simulators use machine intelligence in training medical professionals. AI can be used to simulate brain functioning, and thus prove useful in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological problems. As in case of any other field, repetitive or time-consuming tasks can be managed through the application of artificial intelligence.
  • The greatest advantage of artificial intelligence is that machines do not require sleep or breaks, and are able to function without stopping. They can continuously perform the same task without getting bored or tired. When employed to carry out dangerous tasks, the risk to human health and safety is reduced.

Now let's talk about the negative effects.

  • An important concern regarding the application of artificial intelligence is about ethics and moral values. Is it ethically correct to create replicas of human beings? Do our moral values allow us to recreate intelligence? Intelligence is a gift of nature. It may not be right to install it into a machine to make it work for our benefit.
  •  If robots begin to replace humans in every field, it will eventually lead to unemployment. People will be left with nothing to do. So much empty time may result in its destructive use. Thinking machines will govern all the fields and populate the positions that humans occupy, leaving thousands of people jobless.
  • Recently Foxconn axed 60,000 jobs as robots take over,The Foxconn factory has reduced its employee strength from 110,000 to 50,000, thanks to the introduction of robots. It has tasted success in reduction of labor costs.
  •

  •  Also, due to the reduced need to use their intelligence, lateral thinking and multitasking abilities of humans may diminish. With so much assistance from machines, if humans do not need to use their thinking abilities, these abilities will gradually decline. With the heavy application of artificial intelligence, humans may become overly dependent on machines, losing their mental capacities.
  • Apart from all these cons of AI, there is a fear of robots superseding humans. Ideally, human beings should continue to be the masters of machines. However, if things turn the other way round, the world will turn into chaos. Intelligent machines may prove to be smarter than us, they might enslave us and start ruling the world.

Elon Musk has spoken out against artificial intelligence (AI), declaring it the most serious threat to the survival of the human race.“I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence. If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that. So we need to be very careful,” said Musk. “I’m increasingly inclined to think that there should be some regulatory oversight, maybe at the national and international level, just to make sure that we don’t do something very foolish.”

Musk is one of the high-profile investors, alongside Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and the actor Ashton Kutcher, in Vicarious, a company aiming to build a computer that can think like a person, with a neural network capable of replicating the part of the brain that controls vision, body movement and language.

In January 2015, Stephen HawkingElon Musk, and dozens of artificial intelligence experts signed an open letter on artificial intelligence calling for research on the societal impacts of AI. The letter affirmed that society can reap great potential benefits from artificial intelligence, but called for concrete research on how to prevent certain potential "pitfalls": artificial intelligence has the potential to eradicate disease and poverty, but researchers must not create something which cannot be controlled. The four-paragraph letter, titled Research Priorities for Robust and Beneficial Artificial Intelligence: an Open Letter, lays out detailed research priorities in an accompanying twelve-page document.
we could one day lose control of AI systems via the rise of superintelligences that do not act in accordance with human wishes – and that such powerful systems would threaten humanity. Are such dystopic outcomes possible? If so, how might these situations arise? ...What kind of investments in research should be made to better understand and to address the possibility of the rise of a dangerous superintelligence or the occurrence of an "intelligence explosion"?
Elon Musk says he invested in DeepMind over ‘Terminator’ fears.

How can we guarantee that all the investment and research in development of better AI cannot lead to situation like shown in the movie series Terminator? Is it a good idea to play The God or a path to ultimate destruction?

How to play 1080p videos easily on Android phone with low hardware.

Hello friends

I used the following method to play 1080p videos without lag.
MKV format and many are not completely supported by Android itself. So when we play high quality Videos it lags.

Step 1. I used the software HANDBRAKE, it is an awesome converter. https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

Step 2. After installing select the source file to convert which is originally 1080p .

Step 3. Now go to the video tab and select the following settings

Video Codec: H.264
Framerate : Constant ( reliable)
variable

X264 Tune : Fast Decode
H.264 Profile: Main
High Profile
H.264 level : 4.0 or 4.1 (better)

Right hand side : Make the Quality 22

You can change audio codec too according to your wish.
You can experiment which setting works awesome.
I gave the settings i use.

I know this is not anything new. I made this OP for those who don't know.

Feedbacks are always welcome

Motorola might launch 8 smartphones reportedly this year

While most of the spotlight has been on the
forthcoming successors to the popular Moto X and
the Moto G, Motorola is said to be launching as many
as eight new phones before Christmas this year.
According to the report, the forthcoming smartphones
include the likes of Motorola Droid, Droid Maxx, Droid
Turbo, the flagship Moto X+1 , the Moto G (likely to be
reference to the successor called Moto G2 ), Moto X
Play, Moto S, and the Nexus smartphone codenamed
“Shamu.”
Of these smartphones, the Droid and the Droid Turbo
are likely to debut with the AT&T branding, as well as
be used to promote the forthcoming Star Wars movie.
The Moto X+1, as we have extensively covered, is
said to be Motorola’s flagship device succeeding the
Moto X. It is said feature a 5.2-inch 1080p display,
Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, 12-
megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front-facing
camera, and 32GB/64GB internal storage, but no
option to expand the memory.
The Moto S is a 5.9-inch phablet, and its fate is
dependent on how well the Moto X+1 does. According
to the publication, if the Moto X+1 fails to take off,
the 5.9-inch Moto S will be scrapped, and the
company will launch the Moto X Play with a 5.2-inch
display as Moto S instead. We will however advise
you to take this with a proverbial pinch of salt.
The report further reiterates that Motorola is indeed
working on a Nexus smartphone codenamed Shamu.
From what we know so far, the phablet will feature a
5.2-inch QHD (2560×1440 pixels) display with a pixel
density of 564ppi, 2.65GHz Snapdragon 805 quad-core
processor, 3GB of RAM, 13-megapixel rear camera,
2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, and on the
software front, it will run on Android L.
Motorola has already sent out invites for an event on
September 4 in Chicago , where it is expected to
unveil the Moto G2, Moto X+1 and the Moto 360
smartwatch . A day later, Motorola is also hosting an
event in India , where it could launch the same
products in our country.

Samsung redesigning TouchWiz [Leaked Screenshot ]

Samsung’s TouchWiz UI is infamous in the Android world, and the company likes to keep changing it up with every iteration of their flagship Galaxy phone. According to a leaked screenshot, the Galaxy S5 might bring about a brand new redesign on the Korean manufacturer’s UI, and it looks a little something like this:
New Touchwiz redesign 2014
The new UI uses a more lightweight font, removes drop shadows, and kinda looks like the Magazine UI used in their new Pro Line of tablets. All the icons look different from their ‘Nature UX’ as well, and there’s now a lot of pastel hues and color gradients instead of the previous bright, annoying colors. It also looks like they copied HTC’s Blinkfeed to bring in a stream of information pulled in from various sources like social media, news or apps.
This all comes in from @evleaks who is usually right about this sort of thing. If this is true, it looks like we might see Samsung adopting a much nicer looking UI for their Android phones. What do you think about it?

Google Play Services 4.1 Begins Rollout With Location Reporting Battery Fix, Turn-Based Multiplayer, And More

Google Play Services 4.0 was released in late October just after the Nexus 5 and Kit Kat became official, bringing with it plenty of improvements to things like Google+ sign-in, Wallet, Location services, and more.
Today, via the Android Developers Blog, Google announced the rollout of Google Play Services 4.1, which offers developers more and better tools to make compelling apps.

What's New

First off, 4.1 will give developers the chance to take advantage of turn-based multiplayer mechanics handled totally by Play Services (for playing asynchronous games either with friends or strangers).
The update from version 4.0.34 will also provide a developer preview of the new Google Drive API for Android, which - when implemented - will let users read and write files from Google Drive across their devices, online or off, with changes syncing automatically. The API also comes with a couple of bonuses like a file picker and a "Save" dialog.
Google also notes changes to Google Mobile ads with the 4.1 update:
With Google Play services 4.1, the Google Mobile Ads SDK now fully supports DoubleClick for Publishers, DoubleClick Ad Exchange, and Search Ads for Mobile Apps. You can also use a new publisher-provided location API to provide Google with the location when requesting ads. Location-based ads can improve your app monetization.
Perhaps most important to non-developers, Google appears to have "improved" battery life for users who have Location Reporting enabled. Readers may recall this was an issue with previous Play Services releases.
Finally, the Play Services update improves the Google+ sharing experience by making it easier to share with only the people you want from an app. Sharing now offers better auto-complete and suggests contacts from Gmail, your device, and Google+.

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.
